Spaceship Earth with Vic Perrin 1982-1986

When EPCOT Center opened on October 1, 1982, the voice that welcomed you aboard Spaceship Earth belonged to Vic Perrin. His was the original narration for the park’s signature attraction, guiding riders through the story of human communication — from cave painters and Egyptian scribes to the printing press, the telegraph, and the first computers — all under the sponsorship of the Bell System, whose name greeted you in the entrance plaza.

Perrin’s voice was already famous before Epcot. A veteran radio and television actor, he was the unseen “Control Voice” of The Outer Limits — “We are controlling transmission” — and the original Dr. Zin on Jonny Quest, plus a hundred other roles where the voice mattered more than the face. That calm, measured authority is exactly what this ride needed: a narrator who could make 40,000 years of history feel like one continuous story, because that was the point. Every scene builds on the one before it, right up to the starfield finale.

This recording is the complete ride-through of that original version, all 13 minutes of it, exactly as guests heard it between 1982 and 1986. Walter Cronkite took over the microphone in 1986, followed by Jeremy Irons in 1994 and Judi Dench in 2008 — and you can hear every one of them here in the archive.

With this post, the set is finally complete: all four voices of Spaceship Earth, preserved side by side. And for its first four years, the voice telling that story was Vic Perrin’s.
